Are you ready to make a difference in the world, sustained through yoga and a deeper understanding of trauma in the body-mind?

Join a community of professionals who seek to ‘be the change,’ and embrace the chance for contribution and karma yoga— visiting shelters to support young Nepalese women who’ve been traumatized through abuse and sex trafficking.

Located at the beautiful Vajra Hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal, this Yoga Alliance ® certified training is designed to immerse you in a spiritually vibrant culture, while upgrading your skills so you can safely support students’ healing in classes, retreats or as private clients.
Led by social activist Atira Tan, MA, SEP, 500 E-RYT founder of Art to Healing a women’s program to repair the trauma of sex trafficking, together with trauma specialist and founder of Womb Sense, Gemini Adams, 200 E-RYT, C-TREP, who share 40 years combined experience.

Together, we will present daily yoga, Somatic Experiencing ® approaches,  Trauma Release Exercises (TRE®) classes, combined with lectures and hands-on dyad’s to provide a deep understanding of the impact unresolved trauma has on the mind, body, nervous system, ability to voice one’s needs and effect on our capacity to have compassion.

You’ll learn to spot patterns of physical/physiological with-holding, identify bodies that are ‘at risk’ of re-traumatization, discover how certain asana, pranayama and meditation practices can actually cause further suffering or injury, and how language used in class can trigger constriction and fear, rather than trust and relaxation, so that, as teachers or therapists, you’ll improve your ability as a therapeutic presence to cultivate a safe, supportive space, to promote deeper healing and peace in the world.

Afternoon breaks and evenings offer time to relax, reflect and connect with each other, the wonderful Nepalese culture and wider community. You’ll also have ample opportunity embody the practices, honing your understanding of the material — including the cultivation of cross-cultural sensitivity and how to communicate even when a language barrier exists.

During the final three-days of the program you’ll get to step into service, visiting shelters for young Nepalese girls and women who’ve been traumatized through abuse and sex trafficking where you’ll have the chance to teach supervised classes and put the trauma-informed teachings into practice.

The Curriculum

In this 100-hr Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Training you will not only gain a detailed understanding of the impact that trauma has on the body, mind and ability to voice one’s needs, and the effect this has on our capacity to be both present and at peace inside our own bodies, you will also learn to spot patterns of physical/physiological with-holding, identify bodies that are ‘at risk’ of re-traumatization, discover how certain asana, pranayama and meditation practices can actually cause further suffering or injury, and how language used in class can also create constriction and fear, rather than trust and relaxation, so that, as teachers, you can improve your ability to be a therapeutic presence and cultivate a safe and supportive space, tailoring your classes to bring deeper healing for your students.

Afternoon breaks and evenings offer time to relax, reflect and connect with each other, the wonderful Nepalese culture and wider community. Daily lectures combined with hands-on dyad workshops and daily yoga classes provide opportunities to learn and embody the teachings, honing your understanding of the material — including the cultivation of cross-cultural sensitivity and how to communicate even when a language barrier exists— before taking it to the classroom. Where you’ll step into service, and, under the supervision of your trainers, begin teaching Nepalese girls and women who’ve experienced the trauma of sex slavery, exploitation and abuse.

This is an addendum to a 200, 300 or 500 hr yoga teacher training designed to equip you with the skills to attune your classes or private sessions to work safely and therapeutically with specific communities suffering from anxiety, depression, grief, PTSD, CPTSD and unresolved trauma from abuse, surgery, injury, accidents or difficult pregnancy and birth, as well as the general population of yoga students who may be unaware of how trauma is impacting their mental, physical wellbeing and ability to deepen their own practice.

Key Objectives

1. What is Trauma:

How it Interrupts and impacts Our Ability to Relax, React and Respond

  • Learning the trauma-lens of unresolved trauma and how this commonly leads to states of anxiety, depression, anger, insomnia, addiction, and disembodiment.
  • Learn the neuro/physiological model of the autonomic nervous system.
  • Identify yoga students in reactive states vs. responsive states so as to teach in a way which is sensitive to individual needs.
  • Learn how yoga and other somatic practices can help bring the body back into homeostasis and balance.
  • Identify where we as teachers have unresolved trauma which influences our own ability to  be fully present and learn how to regulate our own nervous systems.
  • Understand the dangers of working with unresolved trauma and how we can respond effectively.

2. Signs of Trauma:

How the body holds and shows signs of trauma.

  • Explore in greater details the core areas of the body which typically store unresolved trauma.
  • Recognise trauma in the body so as to be able to tailor classes, techniques and poses accordingly.
  • Develop an awareness of bodily sensation to guide others in listening to their bodies.
  • Understand the power of different yogic techniques for clearing trauma or bound energy in specific areas of the body.
  • Practice teaching individual poses to target specific areas of trauma bound energy.

3. Touch and Trauma:

How It Can Harm or Heal

  • Understand how trauma from violent or inappropriate touch impacts our capacity for self-protection or to ask for our needs to be met.
  • Learn the “hot” areas of the body that can cause re-traumatization, and what this looks like, how it negatively impacts the physiology and mental health of students, and how it can decimate trust in the student/teacher relationship.
  • Learn the importance of establishing consent, offering choice and ongoing dialogue to cultivate a safe environment in your classes.
  • Practice teaching with clearly established consent which cultivates safety and develops trust in the student/teacher relationship.

4. Trauma Sensitive Language:

What to Say, What Not to Say and Why.

  • Understand how specific terminology can influence the mental/emotional and physiological state of students. 
  • Gain awareness of how language with connotations, and consciously explore creating a dialogue that seeks to support this group, many of whom may not even recall memories of the trauma.
  • Practice teaching asana, pranayama and meditation using trauma-sensitive language.
  • Explore ideas and methods for gaining feedback from students regarding trauma-informed teaching to continuously improve and adapt your dialogue, sequences and adjustments.

5. Cross-Cultural Sensitivity:

Taking Your Trauma-informed Yoga to the World

  • Explore our own cultural sensitivities, ethics, barriers, problems, morals, religious principles and standards.
  • Understand the specific geographic, cultural, religious and behavioral aspects of Nepal and how to safely approach and remain sensitive to the specific needs of the community.
  • Gain cultural awareness regarding stereotypes and biases in working with different groups and learn to appreciate certain cultural phenomena that will build trust, a felt sense of safety and openness, which is key, particularly when working with traumatized populations.
  • Learn how to maintain therapeutic engagement, presence and to effectively communicate in a cross-cultural setting.

6. Supervised Classes and Evaluation:

Observational sessions and teaching Trauma-informed Yoga to Abused Women and Children in Shelters

  • Understand how to plan a class, or series using all of the trauma-informed yoga practices.
  • Practice teaching trauma-informed yoga on fellow students to establish confidence, make mistakes, gain supervised feedback and experiment with the techniques learned in the training.
  • Practice teaching trauma-informed yoga on a community of women and girls who’ve experienced the trauma of sex slavery, exploitation and abuse to develop confidence and practical experience in the field.
  • Evaluate your experiences of teaching trauma-informed yoga to these different groups and identify areas of strength, weakness and how you can further develop your ability when you return home to teach within your community.

As part of our feminine social change model, this teacher training “pays it forward” to assist women and girls from Nepal who have experienced sex slavery and exploitation to also receive valuable therapeutic support and education.

$75 from your fee in this teacher training will sponsor ONE woman in Nepal to attend the Women’s Life Transformational Program, providing the chance for these girls to live a life free from slavery with our charity partner Art to Healing.
